We Value Worship – Malachi 1:6-11

Life Group Study for the week of September 16, 2018

Life Groups have 3 components which can be done in any order:

Application study – Sermon based application and reflection. Reading the passage and discussing how to implement it in life. Always have one extra chair in case someone new comes.

Prayer – Men with men, women with women. Always pray for the extra chair to be filled by someone new.

Fellowship – Getting to know one another.

This Week’s Study:

Malachi 1:6-11 We Value Worship

Read the passage as a group

What other verses were used in the message?

If you haven’t had your prayer time, have someone open the study in prayer.

Serendipity Bible for Groups questions:

1. What care do you take in giving gifts at Christmas time? To a best friend? A family member? A stranger?

2. Who is the target of the Lord’s probing questions in verses 6-8? What is wrong with their gift giving?

3. Why are these people just going through the motions? Don’t care anymore? Couldn’t afford any better? Didn’t think the Lord was that picky? Wanted to defy him openly? Tried to fool him covertly?

4. How do these verses affirm the smallness of the priests? The greatness of the Lord?

Additional questions from the message:

1. Discuss how someone can improve their private worship. Their public worship?

2. We often think only singing is worship. How is listening to the teaching of God’s word an act of worship? How are serving and giving financially acts of worship?

3. How does Romans 12:1 apply to worship?

4. How often do you think about the need to prepare for worship?

5. Discuss the main idea of the message and the 3 application points:

If God’s love is not mediocre, our worship should not be mediocre

a. Worship is all about honor, fear, and reverence

b. Worship always involves sacrifice

c. Worship involves separation and exaltation

6. How can you help one another to become better worshipers?

7. What will you do this week to become a more worshipful person in order to display God’s worth and lift high the name of Jesus?

Honoring a Faithful Servant

On Sunday, August 12 our guest speaker will be pastor Don Porter. Don has been a friend of our church for several years. Don and his wife will be moving to Texas next week and I wanted to use this weekend to say thank you to Don and Dianne for their serving hearts and their faithful service.

Here are some verses that come to mind as we prepare for Don’s message on Sunday.

Leviticus 19:32

1 Timothy 5:17

2 Timothy 4:1-2

2 Timothy 4:5

2 Timothy 4:7

Hello August! Friday Night Dinner & Bible Study, This I Believe & the eNews for August 5, 2018 – https://t.co/OD9NC6ubCh

This Sunday we’ll be tackling message 10 in our series on the Statement of Faith of our church. It’s been a stretch for me to do a topical series that has a lot of verses from different parts of the bible but I appreciate the time to present what is called a “systematic theology” of what every believer in Christ should believe.

[bctt tweet=”There shall be a bodily resurrection of the just and of the unjust; for the former, a resurrection unto life; for the latter, a resurrection unto judgment. (1 Corinthians 15:20–23; John 5:28–29)” username=”baysidesanjose”]

There’s one event that no one on earth will be able to avoid: Judgment Day. The bible clearly teaches that one day we will stand before Jesus and hear one of two things: “Well done my good and faithful servant” or, “Away from me, I never knew you!” With this in mind let me ask you, “Do you know for sure what Jesus will say to you on that day?” [bctt tweet=”Do you know for sure what Jesus will say to you on that day?” username=”baysidesanjose”]

I like to use this post to present several of the passages that I’ve been looking at for this Sunday. Due to time we obviously can’t look at them all in depth on Sunday morning. If you place your mouse over the passages they should appear for you. Here we go:

Matthew 7:21-23

2 Corinthians 5:10

Matthew 25:31-46

1 Corinthians 15:20-23

John 5:28-29

Acts 17:22-31

Revelation 20:11-15

Philippians 2:8-11

There will come a day when Jesus will sit upon a throne. Before that throne EVERY knee will bow and EVERY tongue confess that Jesus is Lord. I pray that we will live with one thought in mind: “I need to live my life as if death is the beginning of a new journey and not the end of a short journey.”

When we talk about salvation, when we talk about Jesus our savior, when we talk about believing in Him, etc, a lot of us will instantly go into bible coma (similar to the food coma of Thanksgiving).

“I’ve heard it before, why do I need to hear it again?”

But remember this one thing: the most important truth in the world, the one teaching from the bible that can make an eternal difference, the one thing we need to shout from every rooftop and condo balcony in the Bay Area is also the simplest.

And it’s this: you need Jesus.

And so, this Sunday we’ll hammer the nail, we’ll push the buttons, we’ll make the point that if the salvation story of Jesus is so simple, then why aren’t you sharing it with everyone you know? Better yet, why isn’t it more evident in your life? Your shoe laces are tied, your shirts not on inside out, you hopefully have the same color socks. All simple things. What about the simple gospel? How’s that going?
