What’s Under the Wrapping?

There are times when God appears to present a conflicting view of the Christian life. While we are saved by grace through faith, God demands that our lives be an offering to him of purity and good works in obedience to what he considers to be appropriate behavior (Ephesians 5:1-5).

Here are three questions that help us to answer the question: Is my life producing the purity and good works that God desires?
1. Does my lifestyle indicate self control and wise choices or excess and carelessness?
Wine is a mocker, strong drink a brawler, and whoever is led astray by it is not wise. – Proverbs 20:1
2. Do I say I love God but my worship patterns, witnessing, and serving indicate a lack of faithfulness?

Many a man proclaims his own steadfast love, but a faithful man who can find? – Proverbs 20:6
3. Can I point to a progressing maturity in my Christian walk that visibly demonstrates purity, consistency, and integrity?

Even a child makes himself known by his acts, by whether his conduct is pure and upright.‭‭ – Proverbs‬ ‭20:11‬

Preach the Word

I don’t know of a single pastor who isn’t stirred and challenged by the apostle Paul’s words to his younger apprentice Timothy in 2 Timothy 4:1-5.

[4:1] I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom: [2] preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching. [3] For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, [4] and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths. [5] As for you, always be sober-minded, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.

I’m sure everyone has their favorite parts to this passage but here are mine:

Is God Speaking to Me?

How Can I Tell When God’s Talking to Me?

Q: Sometimes something good will happen to me, or I’ll have a vivid dream about something, and later I’ll wonder if maybe God was trying to speak to me. But how can I be sure? Maybe it’s just my imagination. — K.M. 

A: We must be cautious about saying that things like this always come from God, or that He is directly speaking to us through them. The reason is because it’s easy for us to misinterpret them or draw the wrong conclusions from them — unless they are clearly in line with what God has told us in His Word, the Bible. 

However, God sometimes does use good things to demonstrate His love for us, or bad things to warn us of danger. He also may use events in our lives to remind us of our need for Him, or call us to repent. God sometimes does this to humans “so that they would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him” (Acts 17:27). 

Recently, for example, I received a letter from a man who had grown up in a Christian home. But he had rebelled against God and lived a wild, immoral life, and now he was in prison. He said it was the best thing that had ever happened to him, because it made him face his sin and admit his need for Christ. Now he’s living for Christ instead of the devil — but it took a series of bad circumstances to bring him to that point. 

Don’t wander through life wondering if God cares for you or has a purpose for your life. Instead, turn to Christ and commit your life to Him. Then you’ll know that no matter what happens to you — either good or bad — you belong to Him forever.

Our Sinless Savior

Is It Possible That Jesus Sinned Maybe Once?

Q: I’ve heard people say that Jesus never sinned, but I have a hard time believing that. He must have done something wrong at least once in His life, like we all do. What difference does it make anyway? — G.K.

A: If Jesus were simply another human being — even an exceptionally good and righteous person — then you’d be right. He’d be just like we are, imperfect and weak and falling short of God’s standards. Even if His outward life seemed perfect (which ours never are), His inner motives and desires would betray Him. But Jesus wasn’t just another human being. Yes, He was fully human, and as such He could experience pain and hunger and thirst. But He also was fully God! This is a mystery we will never fully understand this side of eternity — but when Jesus Christ was born, God Himself came down from Heaven and took upon Himself human flesh. The Bible says, “The Son is the image of the invisible God. … For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him” (Colossians 1:15, 19). Why is this important? First, it means we can know what God is like. Because Jesus came into the world, we know not only that God exists, but that He loves us and wants us to come to know Him personally. This can be your experience, as you ask Him to come into your life and save you. But this is also important because it gives us hope for today and hope for the future. Because He was God, Jesus never sinned — but on the cross He willingly took upon Himself all our sins and died in our place. Don’t turn away from Him, but thank God for His love for you and by faith welcome Christ into your life today.
