Where are You Going for Christmas? – December 16, 2018

Where are You Going for Christmas?

Mike Thorburn/ Luke 2:8-20/ December 16, 2018

When led to places of deep, emotional distress there’s only one place to go

Where is your favorite place to eat or vacation or rest?

How is fear good? How is it bad?

Psalm 56:3

Luke 2:8–20

Luke 2 and Matthew 2
God uses the circumstances of our lives to change us – Mary and Joseph
God uses the circumstances of our lives to change those around us – the shepherds

(1) We need to rest in the manifold presence of Jesus (8-10)

Mary was the first person to ever wrap a Christmas gift

replace fear with praise

Philippians 4:6–7

What other verses encourage you when afraid?

(2) We need to listen to what those around us are saying about Jesus (11-14)

What did the angels say?

(3) When looking for ultimate answers, go to Jesus (15-16)

Why would God want shepherds to be the first ones to see Jesus?

(4) When meeting people who are looking for answers, tell them about Jesus (17-20)

Which parts of the Christmas story could you share with someone who doesn’t know Jesus?

What’s Under the Wrapping?

There are times when God appears to present a conflicting view of the Christian life. While we are saved by grace through faith, God demands that our lives be an offering to him of purity and good works in obedience to what he considers to be appropriate behavior (Ephesians 5:1-5).

Here are three questions that help us to answer the question: Is my life producing the purity and good works that God desires?
1. Does my lifestyle indicate self control and wise choices or excess and carelessness?
Wine is a mocker, strong drink a brawler, and whoever is led astray by it is not wise. – Proverbs 20:1
2. Do I say I love God but my worship patterns, witnessing, and serving indicate a lack of faithfulness?

Many a man proclaims his own steadfast love, but a faithful man who can find? – Proverbs 20:6
3. Can I point to a progressing maturity in my Christian walk that visibly demonstrates purity, consistency, and integrity?

Even a child makes himself known by his acts, by whether his conduct is pure and upright.‭‭ – Proverbs‬ ‭20:11‬
